Out on the line, quartz heater tubes don’t fail in mysterious ways. You see the same patterns every time: one end runs hot while the other lags. The element starts to sag. The quartz gets brittle. Before long, your thermal profile across the glass turns uneven—and the complaints follow. Optical distortion shows up in bent glass, edge compression takes a hit in tempering, and adhesion goes all over the place in coating and lamination. Then the downtime piles up when you have to swap a tube mid-shift. We built our infrared replacement heaters to fix what quartz breaks, without forcing you to rework the whole machine. The goal is simple: deliver repeatable heat, right where the process needs it, when it needs it—with less drift and fewer failures.
What actually matters: output, control, and geometry
Swapping in an infrared heater isn’t just about matching wattage. It’s about matching how the heat behaves in the process—and cutting out the weak points. We use near-infrared (NIR) emitters set up for industrial glass work: high emissivity across a tuned band, fast response, and directional radiation that heats the glass surface directly instead of wasting time heating air. In practice, that means you spend less time bringing a zone up to temperature, and you fight less drift from airflow and ambient swings. Here are the spec targets we design around:
- Response time: Full thermal response in seconds, so setpoint changes land quickly during product changeovers.
- Thermal uniformity: Tight tolerance across the active length, so you don’t get local hot/cold spots that drive stress and optical defects.
- Directional radiation: Energy hits the target with minimal wasted convection, which keeps surface heating consistent for coatings and laminates.
- Mechanical compatibility: Same mounting points and terminal arrangement as the quartz original, so it drops straight into existing fixtures and wiring. We don’t treat every line the same. Watt density, length, and termination style are matched to what the machine actually demands—whether it’s a bending furnace zone, a tempering heating section, or a lamination preheat station.
Why this works: heat control that protects yield and cycle time
Glass processing doesn’t forgive uneven heat. Thermal gradients build stress that can show up as breakage in tempering, wave in bending, and visual defects in coated products. Quartz heaters can do the job, but they drift as they age, and their output is easier to disrupt—air movement, mechanical tolerance shifts, the usual plant variables. Infrared replacement heaters change the picture.
More uniform thermal field, fewer stress-driven defects
Directional infrared radiation heats the glass surface evenly across the product width. That gives you a more consistent temperature profile going into forming or quench, which cuts down thermal stress—and the scrap that comes with it: edge cracks, optical distortion, and inconsistent bow.
Fast response, cleaner changeovers
Glass lines don’t run one product all day. Shifts between thicknesses and glazing configurations need rapid thermal recovery. Infrared elements hit setpoint quickly after a change, so the stabilization window shortens. That translates into more consistent cycles and fewer off-spec sheets during ramp-up.
Energy goes where it counts—onto the glass
Quartz relies heavily on convection, and convection is easy to disturb. Infrared heats the glass and the immediate surface layer, which is exactly what you need for coating drying and lamination preheat. Less wasted heat into the surroundings means more stable zone control and lower energy per sheet.
Less maintenance, more uptime
Quartz is fragile, and repeated thermal cycling accelerates failure. Infrared emitter assemblies are solid-state industrial heating elements—no fragile envelope. Fewer replacements mean fewer interventions, less spare inventory, and fewer restarts that cost you yield.
The practical details: compatibility, install, and operating constraints
A drop-in replacement has to behave like a replacement, not a compromise you have to engineer around. We match the mechanical envelope of the original quartz tube—overall length, diameter, mounting brackets, and terminal orientation—so the install fits the existing hardware. Electrical compatibility comes from specifying voltage and connector type to match the machine’s control cabinet and safety interlocks. That said, there are real constraints you should plan for.
- **Control tuning may need attention.**Infrared responds faster than quartz. If your PID or zone control is tuned aggressively, you can get oscillation. We usually recommend a quick retune to stabilize the loop, especially on older controllers.
- **Clearance and emissivity matter.**Infrared performance depends on line-of-sight to the glass and the emissivity of the target. If the line has shields, reflectors, or coatings that change surface properties, the heat profile will shift. Most lines adapt quickly, but the first run may need a small tweak.
- **High-temperature zones need the right terminations.**In furnace-adjacent areas, terminals and insulation have to be rated for the ambient temperature. We spec high-temperature leads and connectors to keep resistance stable and connections reliable. If you’re replacing quartz in tempering, bending, lamination preheat, coating drying, or insulating glass sealing, the objective is the same: make heat predictable, repeatable, and controllable. Infrared replacement heaters do that by putting the energy where it needs to be—on the glass—and by removing the fragility and drift that quartz tubes bring into the process. When the line runs steady, you can feel it. Fewer temperature swings. Fewer scrap sheets. Fewer maintenance stops. That’s what swapping quartz for infrared looks like on the floor.
V praxi to znamená kratší čas na dosažení teploty v zóně a méně posunů způsobených prouděním vzduchu a fluktuacemi okolní teploty.
Proč to funguje: řízení tepla chrání výtěžnost a dobu cyklu
To vede k pravidelnějším cyklům a méně výrobkům mimo specifikaci v době rozběhu.
Praktické detaily: kompatibilita, instalace a provozní omezení
