
Why we put our bathroom heat lamps through the “steam chamber”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got steam everywhere, constant temperature swings, and water vapor that finds its way into every tiny crack. If a lamp isn’t built for that kind of chaos, the quartz tube will eventually crack or the electrical parts will just rust away. That’s why we put our lamps through damp-heat aging tests. We basically try to break them in the lab so they don’t break in your home. The battle against moisture Here’s the thing about most infrared lamps: they usually fail at the seal. When a freezing drop of moisture hits a scorching hot quartz tube, it creates a lot of stress. If that seal between the lamp and the base isn’t perfect, steam seeps in. Once that happens, the tungsten filament oxidizes or the terminals short out. To stop this, we toss our lamps into a controlled chamber and simulate years of steamy showers. If the seal doesn’t hold there, it doesn’t leave our floor. Checking the “invisible” stuff We don’t just flip a switch to see if the light comes on. That’s too simple. We’re looking for leakage current. In a humid bathroom, any tiny gap in the insulation can lead to dangerous current leaks. We push these lamps through a brutal cycle—heating them up, cooling them down, all while keeping the humidity at a sticky 90%. It’s a bit overkill, but it means you won’t be tripping your circuit breaker three months after installation. The trade-off To survive these tests, we use a higher grade of quartz and some pretty heavy-duty sealing compounds. But there’s a catch. These materials are great at keeping water out, but they make the tubes a bit more fragile if you drop them or manhandle them during installation. You’ll want to be gentle when you’re putting them in. Sure, we could make them “indestructible” to a drop, but we’d have to sacrifice the seals. We’d rather give you a lamp that stays electrically stable for years than one that can survive a fall but burns out the first time you take a hot shower.
