Getting the wattage right for your bathroom is basically a balancing act. You want to feel that cozy warmth the second you step out of the shower, but you don’t want to turn your bathroom into a sauna or waste a ton of money on your electric bill.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing: it all depends on how much space you’re dealing with. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—something under 5m²—you only need about 400W to 600W. If you try to cram a 1200W heater in there, it’s going to feel like a heat spike. Not a good feeling. But for those bigger master baths or wet rooms (around 10m² to 15m²), you’ll want to go heavier, probably between 1200W and 2000W. We stick with shortwave infrared for this. Why? Because it heats you, not the air. In a room with a loud exhaust fan or a door that’s always swinging open, trying to heat the air is a losing battle. Shortwave just hits you directly. It’s instant.
The “Wet Room” Problem
Bathrooms are damp. Water and electricity are a bad mix. That’s why we only use IP55-rated housings. It’s just a fancy way of saying the unit can handle dust and splashes of water without shorting out. It keeps the internals bone-dry. Honestly, it’s a non-negotiable. One quick tip: high-wattage lamps get hot—really hot—right where they’re mounted. If you tuck a 2000W unit into a tight ceiling space without any room for the air to move, you might trigger the thermal cut-off. Give the housing some breathing room.
Making it Actually Efficient
If you want to save money, don’t just leave these things running all day. Hook them up to a timer or a humidity sensor. Plus, think about “zoning.” Instead of buying one massive 2500W beast that heats the whole room, try two smaller 600W lamps. Put one over the shower and one by the vanity. That way, you only heat the spot where you’re actually standing. It’s smarter, it’s cheaper, and it just makes more sense.
