Picking the Right Infrared Lamp for Your Bathroom
Here’s a common mistake people make: they think the biggest wattage is always the best. It isn’t. If you just buy the most powerful lamp on the shelf, you’re probably just throwing money away on your electric bill—or worse, turning your bathroom into a sauna. It’s really just about finding that sweet spot between the size of your room and how much heat you actually need.
Getting the Power Right
The thing about infrared is that it doesn’t heat the air; it heats you. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 5m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is usually plenty. In a space that small, the heat builds up quickly. You’ll feel cozy the second you walk in without feeling like you’re standing too close to a campfire. But if your bathroom is a bit larger—say, 6m² to 12m²—you’ll want to jump up to 800W or 1200W. If you go too low here, the heat just vanishes into the room. You’ll feel great while standing directly under the lamp, but the moment you step away to grab a towel? Cold. Not a great feeling.
Watch Your Breakers
Now, we should talk about the electrical side of things. More power means the room warms up faster, sure. But it also puts a lot more pressure on your wiring. If you decide to hook up three 1200W lamps on one residential circuit, you’re playing a dangerous game with your breaker box. It’s a balancing act. You want it warm, but you don’t want to be resetting your power in the garage every time you take a shower.
A Quick Warning on High Power
If you go for the heavy hitters—like a 1500W lamp—be careful where you put it. That much heat is intense. If the lamp is mounted too low, it can actually burn your skin. It’s a massive amount of warmth, but you need the ceiling height to give that heat room to spread out before it hits you. Before you order the most powerful unit available, just take a quick look up. Make sure you actually have the clearance for it.
