
Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “torture test”
Bathrooms are basically death traps for heating elements. Think about it: one minute it’s bone-dry, and the next, you’re standing in a cloud of steam that’s practically 100% humidity. Most of the time, when an infrared lamp dies, it isn’t actually the filament’s fault. It’s the seal. If the spot where the quartz tube meets the electrodes isn’t perfect, moisture sneaks in. The second that damp air hits the white-hot tungsten?**Pop.**Game over.
The fight against the steam
To stop that from happening, we put our ceiling lamps through “damp-heat aging.” It sounds fancy, but it’s really just a way to simulate years of steamy showers in a few days. We aren’t just checking if they “work.” We’re trying to break them. We want to find the exact moment they give up. If a sealant is off by even a tiny fraction of a millimeter, water vapor gets inside and causes oxidation. That makes the filament thin out until it eventually just snaps.
Finding the weak spot
The real battle happens where the glass meets the metal connector. That’s the weakest link in the whole chain. We toss the lamps into high-humidity chambers and then spike the heat. This forces the materials to expand and shrink over and over again. We’re hunting for micro-cracks. If a lamp can’t handle a beating in our lab, it has no chance of surviving a cold winter in your bathroom.
It’s all a balancing act
You might think, “Just make the seal tighter!” But it’s not that simple. If you tighten it too much, the quartz can’t move when it gets hot, and the whole thing might crack under the stress. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. We’ve tuned our seals to be flexible enough to handle the heat, but tight enough to keep the steam out. That’s how you get a lamp that actually lasts instead of burning out after three months. One quick thing, though. All the testing in the world won’t help if your wiring is a mess. Make sure your fixture is properly grounded. If the electrical work is sloppy, a short circuit is inevitable in a damp room, no matter how good the lamp is.
