
Keeping Your Bathroom IR Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just about everything. You can’t just toss a regular heater into the ceiling and hope for the best. If the air is thick with moisture, you’re looking at current leaks or, worse, a total short circuit. Here’s the thing about moisture: it finds a way in. Water vapor can sneak through basic housings. Once it hits the terminals, you get “tracking,” which is basically electricity leaking across the insulator. It’s not pretty. To stop that, we stick with high-grade ceramic insulators and tight gaskets. These materials don’t soak up water and they keep the electricity where it belongs. We make sure the housing hits an IPX4 rating (or better) so the live wiring stays bone dry. Then there’s the wiring. You absolutely have to run these through an RCD or GFCI. We build the chassis with a dedicated grounding lug for a reason. If a seal fails or a wire fries, the RCD trips instantly. It’s your safety net. Plus, using double-insulated cables means you aren’t relying on just one thing to keep you safe. But it’s a bit of a balancing act. Those high-wattage quartz lamps get incredibly hot. If we sealed the whole unit airtight to keep the water out, the lamp would basically bake itself and pop. So, we use vented, drip-proof enclosures. It lets the heat breathe while blocking the droplets from getting inside. If you vent too much, you lose your water protection. Too little, and you’ll be replacing your lamps way too often. One last tip: keep an eye on your voltage drop if you’re running long lines to a few different units. Using wiring that’s too thin leads to heat buildup inside your walls. In a humid bathroom, that’s a fire risk you just don’t want.
