
Stop Glass Edge Chipping with a Little Heat
Cutting glass always feels like a fight against the material itself. You score it, you snap it, and then you see those annoying little micro-fractures—the “chipping” or corner breakouts—that ruin a perfectly good piece. It’s frustrating. The problem is all about internal tension. But there’s a trick to it: infrared (IR) preheating. Basically, we warm up the glass before the blade even touches it, which completely changes how the material behaves. Why bother with the heat? Think of cold glass as being “tense.” When it’s cold, it’s brittle and prone to shattering in unpredictable ways. By hitting the surface with IR radiation, we relax the material. It’s a subtle shift at the molecular level, but it makes a world of difference. The crack follows the score line much more cleanly. No more jagged edges. No more wasted sheets. Just a smooth, satisfying break. Why IR lamps specifically? We use short-wave IR lamps because they don’t mess around. A standard heater just warms up the air around the glass, which is a waste of time and energy. IR lamps dump the heat directly into the glass. It’s fast. Really fast. This means you can keep your production line compact and heat the glass just a few seconds before the cutting head arrives. The tricky part Now, you can’t just crank the heat to the max. If you go overboard with the wattage or leave the glass under the lamps too long, you’ll actually create new thermal stress. It’s a balancing act. You have to get the distance and the timing just right. And a heads-up: these lamps get incredibly hot. If your cooling system isn’t up to the task, you’re going to fry your sensors or even warp the machine frame. Not a good look. My advice? Wire everything into a PID controller. It keeps the surface temperature steady, and steady heat means steady cuts. Keep that temperature window tight, and you’ll see your scrap pile shrink almost immediately.
